Fertility timing – the right time for sex

Aug 17, 2020 | Uncategorized

TIMING IS EVERYTHING WHEN TTC

Many couples aren’t sure when the best time is for them to try to conceive. Charting your cycle is very important so that you become acquainted with your ovulation time more or less and can see when you typically ovulate. Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary. The egg then moves down the fallopian tube where it can be fertilised. If sperm are in the fallopian tube when the egg is released, there is a good chance that the egg will be fertilised, creating an embryo, which can grow into a baby.

Once you know when you are ovulating, it is good to start about 5-6 days before ovulation and have intercourse every other day, on the day of peak ovulation, and the day after. Having sex during this time gives you the best chance of getting pregnant.

How to know when you’re ovulating

As I mentioned above, knowing when you ovulate can help you plan for sex at the right time and improve your chance of getting pregnant.

If you want to know when you ovulate, there are some things that you can do:

  • Keep track of your menstrual cycles on a chart, or on a free period-tracker app.
  • Get to know the length of your menstrual cycle: It is important to record when your period start, the first day of your period is the day 1 of your menstrual cycle and the day before your next period begins is the last day of your cycle.
  • Track your body temperature – There is a small rise in the body temperature after ovulation.
  • Your cervical mucus might become clearer and more slippery around time of ovulation.
  • Use an ovulation predictor kit, that measure your hormones in your pee.

What can contribute to be able to conceive during the fertility window?

  1. Having sex as close as possible to the time of ovulation increases the chance of pregnancy.
  2. If you have sex six or more days before ovulation, your changes are almost zero.
  3. If you have sex five days before ovulation, your changes of getting pregnant are about 10 percent.
  4. If you have sex on the day of ovulation, or two days before, your changes are more or less 30 percent.
Of course all this depends on your age and conditions.

Don’t forget to keep the flame burning!

The best sexual position for conception is the missionary position.

Having sex during off times is also important, because having passion can impact hormones and relaxation during this time. Many times couples share that sex can be mechanical and filled with pressure. Connecting on times that are not fertile windows will help associate the connection so it isn’t a ‘to-do’.
